Postpartum Depression – The Basics

Postpartum depression is a depressive disorder that is connected to the pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. According to the definition and diagnosis of mental illness – postpartum depression is not different from depression other ones. In other words, PPD is a major or minor occurrence of depression within four weeks after delivery.

PPD is regarded as a bio-psycho-social phenomenon. This means that it is caused by a complex combination of biological, psychological and social factors. One of the best ways to cure this depression is to ban the word “depression” from your life and live your life without any stress.

Many experts observe that mainly the normal depression is a problem of coping and adjustment, where PPD is one in which an extreme level of continuum of the adjustment experience. In this perspective, the difference between PPD and normal postpartum is only of the adjustment experiences and happens due to the intensity of feeling.

The main symptoms of PPD are high levels of anxiety, crying for without having any reason, the great sadness, insomnia, inability to care for themselves or infants, a lack of feeling for the baby, excessive mood swings, feelings of failure, helplessness, and in some cases there might be suicidal thoughts.

In comparison with other forms of depression, PPD can be more or less rigorous in nature. More frequently, women who suffer from postpartum depression find themselves getting better with additional assistance and emotional support, better self-care, and also with some hope and confidence.
